The Unique Challenges of PEEK Machining
PEEK is a very difficult material to machine, compared with common metals or plastics. Many general CNC shops cannot handle it properly, because of its unique material properties, which leads to dimension deviation, surface defects and part failure. We understand these challenges deeply:
Heat Concentration Issue
PEEK has very low thermal conductivity, which means the heat generated during cutting cannot be dissipated quickly, leading to local overheating of the workpiece, which can cause material melting.
Thermal Expansion Issue
PEEK has much higher thermal expansion coefficient than metals. Local overheating during cutting will cause the workpiece to expand temporarily, leading to dimension drift after cooling, which makes it hard to hold tight tolerance.
Surface & Tool Issue
Overheating during cutting will cause PEEK to melt and smear on the cutting edge, leading to poor surface finish and burrs. Also, the semi-crystalline nature of PEEK causes faster tool wear than common plastics.
Our Specialized Solutions for PEEK Machining
With 10+ years of experience in high-performance plastic machining, we have developed specialized processes to overcome all these PEEK machining challenges, to deliver stable, precision parts that work perfectly in high-temperature environments:
Optimized Cutting Parameters
We use customized cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut parameters specifically optimized for PEEK, to minimize heat generation during the cutting process, avoiding local overheating.
Dedicated PEEK Tooling
We use specialized carbide tools with polished cutting edges, which are optimized for PEEK machining, to reduce tool wear and avoid material smearing, ensuring smooth surface finish.
Temperature Controlled Machining
We use precision air cooling and MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubrication) strategy during machining, to keep the workpiece temperature stable below 80°C, effectively eliminating thermal expansion error.
Stress Relief Process
We perform standardized annealing stress relief process after machining, to eliminate internal stress of PEEK parts, ensuring long-term dimension stability even in high-temperature working environments.
Post-machining Dimension Calibration
We wait for the workpiece to cool down to room temperature before final inspection and finishing, to ensure that the final dimension is exactly what you need, no dimension drift after cooling.
Process Monitoring
We monitor the machining process in real time, to ensure that all parameters are kept within the optimized range, to deliver consistent quality for every part, even for large batch orders.
Internal Test Data (For Reference Only): In our PEEK machining test, our temperature control strategy reduced the workpiece temperature rise from 45°C to 12°C during cutting, and the dimension deviation was controlled within ±0.015mm, which is far lower than the industry average of ±0.03mm.
